TDEE Calculator Guide
TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) is the total number of calories a person burns in 24 hours through all pathways: basal metabolic rate (BMR), thermic effect of food (TEF), exercise activity, and non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT).
This calculator supports two BMR formulas: Mifflin-St Jeor (recommended, 1990) and Harris-Benedict (revised 1984). Combined with 5 activity levels, it calculates your estimated TDEE. It also provides reference values at different calorie deficits and surpluses, along with estimated macronutrient breakdown.
TDEE Calculation Formula
Step 1: Calculate BMR Mifflin-St Jeor (recommended): Male: BMR = 10รweight + 6.25รheight - 5รage + 5 Female: BMR = 10รweight + 6.25รheight - 5รage - 161 Harris-Benedict (traditional): Male: BMR = 88.362 + 13.397รweight + 4.799รheight - 5.677รage Female: BMR = 447.593 + 9.247รweight + 3.098รheight - 4.330รage Step 2: Multiply by activity multiplier to get TDEE Sedentary (1.2) | Lightly Active (1.375) | Moderately Active (1.55) | Very Active (1.725) | Extra Active (1.9) Step 3: Reference adjustments Mild deficit: TDEE - 500 kcal | Larger deficit: TDEE - 750~1000 kcal Mild surplus: TDEE + 300 kcal | Larger surplus: TDEE + 500 kcal
Understanding TDEE Components
TDEE consists of four components:
โ Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) โ 60-70% The minimum energy needed to maintain vital functions: heartbeat, breathing, cell repair, temperature regulation. This is the largest single component.
โก Thermic Effect of Food (TEF) โ ~10% Energy used to digest, absorb, and metabolize food. Protein has the highest TEF (20-30%), carbs (5-10%), fat (0-3%).
โข Exercise Activity (TEE) โ 15-30% Calories burned through planned physical exercise.
โฃ Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT) โ Variable All daily activities besides exercise: walking, housework, standing, fidgeting. NEAT is a major source of individual variation in TDEE.
