Ideal Body Weight (IBW) is a theoretical reference weight calculated from height and sex. It provides a general reference point for understanding where an individual's weight falls relative to statistical norms.
This calculator uses two methods: โ Broca modified formula: Simple and widely used for quick estimation โก BMI reverse calculation: Derives a healthy weight range from BMI 18.5-24.9
Both methods provide general reference values. Individual variation in muscle mass, bone structure, and body composition means that no single formula applies perfectly to everyone.
Ideal Weight Formulas
Method 1: Broca Modified Formula Male reference weight(kg) = (height in cm - 80) ร 0.7 Female reference weight(kg) = (height in cm - 70) ร 0.6 Normal range = reference weight ร (0.9 ~ 1.1) Method 2: BMI Reverse Calculation Lower bound = 18.5 ร [height(m)]^2 Upper bound = 24.9 ร [height(m)]^2 Example (175cm male): Broca: (175 - 80) ร 0.7 = 66.5kg, range 59.9-73.2kg BMI: 18.5ร1.75^2=56.7kg to 24.9ร1.75^2=76.2kg
Other Ideal Weight Formulas
Several other formulas exist for estimating ideal weight:
โ Devine Formula (1974): Male IBW = 50 + 2.3ร(height in inches - 60) Female IBW = 45.5 + 2.3ร(height in inches - 60) Originally developed for medication dosing.
โก Robinson Formula: Male IBW = 52 + 1.9ร(height in inches - 60) Female IBW = 49 + 1.7ร(height in inches - 60)
โข Miller Formula: Male IBW = 56.2 + 1.41ร(height in inches - 60) Female IBW = 53.1 + 1.36ร(height in inches - 60)

All formulas are statistical averages. Individual factors such as muscle mass, bone density, and body type affect actual ideal weight.
