Body Fat Calculator Guide

Body fat percentage is the proportion of fat mass to total body weight. Unlike BMI, body fat percentage directly reflects the actual fat content in the body, making it a more precise indicator for classification purposes.

This calculator uses the US Navy body fat formula, developed in 1984, which estimates body fat percentage based on waist, neck, and height measurements (plus hip for females). While not as precise as DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing, it provides a practical estimation for general reference.

US Navy Body Fat Formula

Male body fat = 495 / (1.0324 - 0.19077×log10(waist-neck) + 0.15456×log10(height)) - 450

Female body fat = 495 / (1.29579 - 0.35004×log10(waist+hip-neck) + 0.22100×log10(height)) - 450

Body fat classification (American Council on Exercise):

Essential fat is the minimum amount needed for basic physiological function. Females have higher essential fat due to hormonal and reproductive functions.

Body Fat vs BMI

BMI and body fat percentage measure different things:
