Universal Unit Converter Instructions

The universal unit converter is an integrated multi-category conversion tool that supports unit conversions for five major physical quantities: length, weight (mass), area, volume, and temperature. Select the target category, enter a value, specify the source and target units, and get precise conversion results.

This tool uses the "base unit method" for conversions — all units in each category are linked through a base unit (such as meter, kilogram, liter, Celsius) to ensure consistent precision. It also provides an "All Conversion Results" view to see the equivalent value across all units in the same category at once.

Core Conversion Relationships by Category

【Length】Base: Meter (m)
1km=1000m, 1ft=0.3048m, 1in=0.0254m
1mi=1609.344m, 1 Li=500m

【Weight】Base: Kilogram (kg)
1t=1000kg, 1lb≈0.4536kg, 1oz≈0.0283kg
1 Jin=0.5kg, 1 Liang=0.05kg

【Area】Base: Square Meter (m²)
1km²=10⁶m², 1 Mu≈666.67m²
1 Hectare=10000m², 1 Acre≈4046.86m²

【Volume】Base: Liter (L)
1m³=1000L, 1gal(US)≈3.785L
1gal(UK)≈4.546L

【Temperature】Special formulas (non-linear)
°F = °C×9/5+32, K = °C+273.15

Conversion Examples

📋
【Example 1】Height conversion 1.75 meters = ? feet/inches 175cm ÷ 30.48 ≈ 5.74 feet = 5 feet + 0.74×12 inches ≈ 5'9" 【Example 2】Weight conversion 70 kg = ? pounds 70 ÷ 0.453592 ≈ 154.3 lbs 【Example 3】Room area 20 square meters = ? square feet 20 × 10.7639 ≈ 215.3 sq ft 【Example 4】Temperature conversion Body temperature 37°C = 98.6°F = 310.15K Boiling point 100°C = 212°F = 373.15K

Important Notes

💡
- Temperature conversion is non-linear (has an offset), unlike other physical quantities - "Jin" is a Chinese customary unit, 1 Jin = 500g (mainland China standard) - The conversion for "Mu" varies slightly across different historical periods; this tool uses the modern standard value - US gallon (≈3.785L) differs from the UK gallon (≈4.546L) - The Chinese "Li" is 500 meters in mainland China; it may vary in other regions

Application Scenarios

  • - Studying/traveling abroad: Convert metric units to locally used units
  • - Import product comparison: Understand foreign product specifications (e.g., screen sizes in inches, weight in pounds)
  • - Engineering drawing reading: Switch between metric/imperial drawings
  • - Cooking recipe adjustment: Convert foreign recipe units to commonly used local units
  • - Academic research: Quickly convert various physical quantity units in papers

Introduction to the International System of Units (SI)

The International System of Units (Système International d'Unités) is the most widely used measurement system today, consisting of 7 base units (meter, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, candela). Almost all other physical quantities can be derived from these 7 base units.

Of the 5 categories covered by this tool, length, mass, and temperature are base units; area and volume are derived units (squares and cubes of length, respectively). Understanding the SI system helps in more accurately grasping the intrinsic relationships between physical quantities — such as density = mass/volume, speed = distance/time, etc.
